What is Sodium silicate? The sodium silicate, which is also known as paohua alkali is an inorganic substance its aqueous solutions are usually referred to a sodium silicate and is a form of mineral adhesive. Its chemical formula is Na2O*nSiO2, it is a soluble silicate inorganic that has a variety of applications. It is soluble in water is colorless. It is slightly translucent or transparent glass body. It’s used for filler, fabric fire retardant and adhesive. What does Sodium Silicate used for? Soaps and detergents It is possible for sodium silicate to enhance surface effects for instance, wetting the surface with organic surfactants (reducing surface tension) it helps to keep small oil particles or dirt from being absorbed by the detergent or helping to get dirt off the surface. The salt’s alkalinity enables the neutralization of acidic soil and promote the emulsification of oil and the dispersing of protein. Packaging The use of sodium silicate as a coating may improve the durability that the cardboard is made of and also improve the resistance of it to water, fire, grease and pests. Silicate is also used to repel oil alone. The sodium silicate could be utilized as a catalyst for application of auxiliary materials like paraffins, naphthalene chloride, wax varnish, nitrocellulose, and other cardboard coatings. It fills the pores of the cardboard and reduces the water absorption of the material, thus reducing the amount of topcoat required. Construction Soluble silicate is a good choice as a cement binder. When Portland is combined with cement, the components undergo chemical reactions to make substances with strong bonding properties. It can also be used to improve the durability of concrete. Mining industry Soluble silicate is employed for many mineral enrichment methods. The main function of sodium silicate in ore flotation is to serve as an antiflocculant in order to disperse undesirable siliceous substances. It is only a tiny amount of silicate that has a concentration comparable to that used for cleaning processes is needed. The capacity of silicate to create a sodium ion layer on the surface of the particle is vital in preparing the surface for the specific separation. The silicate in sodium can help prevent corrosion, which reduces ball wear on the mill. Water treatment Dilute anionic silica in aqueous solution provided by soluble silicate can slow the process of corrosion on metal surfaces. As an additive in water, dissolved SiO2 helps prevent the corrosion of storage tanks for metal and distribution lines. It decreases the risk of corrosion on pipelines as well as pumps due to acidic water (for example, from mine drainage) It also reduces corrosion in grinding with ball rods and can prevent the corrosion of processing equipment, which is an ingredient in agglomeration, spray drying or dry mixed detergent formulations; and metal parts in laundry and dishwashing equipment. A component of the fluid in the ‘permanent’ automobile cooling system. As an additive for water treatment chemicals in cooling towers and boilers.
