ammonium sodium hydrogen phosphate is a salt which has many applications in the food industry and also in water treatment. It is used as an emulsifier and thickening agent in processed cheese, as a leavening agent for baked goods and as a pH controlling agent in food. It is also useful in detergents for softening and as an anti rust solution.

Process Description:

In one aspect of the invention, a wet process phosphoric acid solution which may be a defluorinated phosphoric acid solution is first added with ammonia until ammonium dihydrogenphosphate or a mixture thereof is formed. The phosphoric acid solution is then neutralized with an alkali such as sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide or the like to remove fluorine therefrom.

The impurities such as Fe, Al, Si, F and the like contained in the phosphoric acid solution are allowed to precipitate from the solution as sparingly soluble phosphates or the like. The phosphoric acid solution is subsequently adjusted to a pH value which is at least sufficient to avoid the precipitation of the ammonium dihydrogenphosphate together with the impurities.

To the thus adjusted liquor, ammonia is added in sufficient quantities to adjust the pH to a range of 5.5- 9.0. This is done to prevent the formation of aluminum fluoride or iron fluoride from the ammonium dihydrogenphosphate in the liquid phase as a result of the neutralization process.
