Trimethyl borate is used in organic synthesis as a methylation agent and boron source. It reacts with Grignard reagents and organolithium compounds to yield dimethyl boronates, which upon aqueous treatment afford the corresponding boronic acids. It is also a precursor of borate esters, which find use in Suzuki coupling reactions. It is also used in the preparation of sodium borohydride. It is miscible with tetrahydrofuran, ether, isoporpylamine and hexane. It is incompatible with oxidizing agents.
Zhou et al. designed a series of benzoxaborole derivatives with different substituents on the phenyl moiety that showed potent antiparasitic, antibacterial, and anticancer activities. The synthesis of the benzoxaborole compound 65 was accomplished by treating 2-bromo-1,4-dimethylbenzene 58 with KMnO4 to form acid 59 and subsequent reduction using lithium borohydride to afford dimethyl boronic acid 60. This was then treated with hexadecyl phthalic acid to give the chalcone benzoxaborole compound 63.
