Strontium chloride, also known as SrCl2, is a white solid, that is slightly soluble in water and alcohol. This compound is primarily used in the manufacture of strontium salts and pigments, as a flux for glass-making and electron tubes, and to make fireworks. It is also useful in metallurgy to lower the melting point of metals such as aluminum and titanium. It is an ingredient in some phosphate rock products and in some refractory materials for industrial use. It is also used in aqueous solutions of calcium carbonate for neutralizing acids such as sulfates and nitrates, to improve their clarity, and in the manufacture of glass and pottery. Radioactive strontium-89, which is used in the treatment of bone cancer and other diseases, is produced by the radiochemical separation of strontium from barium ions in aqueous solution, after which it is precipitated from the solution by evaporation and centrifuging.

Strontium is generally a non-toxic element, but its compounds can be toxic, especially when the crystals are inhaled. This is especially true of the anhydrous form SrCl2. This salt is used to prepare yellow strontium chromate, and as a corrosion inhibitor for aluminium. It is also useful in aqueous solutions to remove traces of lead and copper from soils, and in the preparation of alumina for aluminium smelting. It is also a component of some toothpastes, such as Elecol and Sensodyne, which reduce tooth sensitivity by forming a barrier over microscopic tubules in the dentin that have become exposed due to gum recession.
