lithium nitrate solution is an industrial grade chemical that functions like an oxidizing agent and also acts as an antistatic agent for non-woven fabrics and as a glass etching agent. It is made by reacting lithium carbonate with nitric acid and has the molecular formula of LiNO3. When thermally decomposed, it liberates lithium oxide (Li2O), nitrogen dioxide (N2O) and oxygen. Lithium nitrate is used extensively in the manufacture of red-colored fireworks.

American Elements offers a broad range of moderate to highly concentrated liquid solutions of lithium salts at customer specified concentration or up to the maximum stoichiometric concentration. The solutions are typically packaged in 55 gallon drums and smaller units or in liquid totes. American Elements maintains specialized solution production facilities in the United States, Northern Europe (Liverpool, UK) and China to allow for lower freight costs and faster delivery to customers.

Nitrate additives are known to improve reversibility of carbonate-based lithium-oxygen batteries. However, the exact mechanism remains a mystery, with several speculations being proposed. We have recently introduced a soluble ionic liquid (SIL) of highly concentrated 4.0 M lithium nitrate in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) that works more effectively as a redox mediator than lower concentration solutions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows that the 4.0 M DMSO-LiNO3 SIL suppresses side products during discharging and charging.

This article provides an explanation of the behavior of this solvate-ionic system and discusses its potential applications in battery development. The preparation method for this nitrate solution is simple and economical, and the evaporating terminal temperature can be easily controlled.
