Using the same oil you likely have in your first aid kit, you can help prevent rust on a number of metal items. Petrolatum, a form of petroleum jelly, acts as a sealant that hinders water from entering the surface of iron. This simple step can keep many metal items from rusting, especially when stowed away in damp areas.

A mineral oil rust prevention is an inexpensive, easy-to-use product for protecting metal components from corrosion. It is used by the engineering industry to protect components in long-term storage or shipments destined for transcontinental transportation. Its soluble film is fingerprint-suppressing and self-healing, while remaining compatible with lubricating oils. It is also non-staining and easily removable with solvents.

International Chemical Company offers a line of straight and soluble oil rust inhibitors for long-term and transcontinental storage and shipping protection. The products are formulated with high-quality mineral oils and emulsifiers, along with powerful advanced-technology additives, to provide excellent corrosion and oxidation protection. The soluble oils are tested using the VISAYA Iron Digital Detection Imaging Device, which improves visual ratings of corrosiveness, integrally identifying exact levels of corrosion in four steps with automatic classification.

For a more permanent solution to protecting tools from rust, try adding silica gel packs in your tool cabinet and chest to absorb moisture. You can also use mothballs, which contain camphor, to inhibit oxidation by inhibiting condensation in the cabinet. Another great solution is a small dehumidifier, which moderately warms the cabinet to elevate the air temperature and avoid condensation, which helps prevent rusting.
