A platinum sponge is a metallic powder that can be used in gas absorption, catalysis, or oxidation. Its most notable feature is that it can adsorb large amounts of gas. In the gas absorption case, it is particularly effective at adsorbing hydrogen.

It is made up of almost 100% pure platinum. This makes it a popular material for producing autocatalysts for diesel vehicles. The sponge is also used in the chemical industry, especially in the production of combustible gases and hydrocarbons.

Although platinum is a heavy metal, it is relatively light on the eyes and can be dissolved in acid. When dissolved, it is capable of absorbing a large volume of hydrogen.

There are several interesting things to know about platinum. Platinum is one of the few metals that are resistant to corrosion. However, it does have a relatively high melting point and is attacked by fluorine and chlorine at a relatively high temperature.

The other things to know about platinum include that it can be remelted in an induction furnace and that it is capable of being dissolved in aqua regia. As a result, it is ideal for adsorption and a catalyst in gas reactions.

The name platinum is derived from the Spanish word ‘platina’ meaning silver. It is also considered to be the silver-white metal. Historically, it has been found in heavy concentrations in meteorites.

The name of the platinum-sponge-like metal is probably a bit of a misnomer. A more accurate description is a porous grayish-black form of platinum. Generally, it is 99% pure.
