Stainless steel is a widely used metal in the manufacturing industry. It is a versatile metal, with different grades and alloys providing specific properties to suit various industrial applications. stainless steel ss316l is an austenitic grade with high corrosion resistance, especially in hard water and acidic environments. It is available in a wide range of wire, ribbon, strip and sheet shapes. It is commonly used in cookware, cutlery, hardware, surgical instruments, major appliances and building materials such as piping and plumbing fixtures, furniture, flooring and cladding for skyscrapers and large buildings.
Unlike the standard 316 stainless steel, ss316l contains less carbon and molybdenum to reduce sensitization and minimize detrimental carbide precipitation. This makes it a better choice for applications requiring a lot of welding. It also has improved resistance to pitting corrosion in chloride solutions.
Despite the differences, both grades have similar corrosion resistance and strength properties at elevated temperatures. Both can be worked to achieve good formability and weldability. SS316L, in particular, has a low carbon content to minimize the formation of deleterious chromium carbide precipitates during welding, which could compromise its corrosion resistance. It is used in chemical, dye, paper, photographic equipment, architectural components and marine facilities, especially where harsh environment are present. It is also an excellent choice for applications that require a high level of resistance to atmospheric corrosion and chemical attack.
