Strontium Phosphate Beta Form

Stronium (Sr) is a trace element that plays a role in bone metabolism. When mixed with hydroxyapatite (HA) via surface exchange or ion substitution, it enhances bone formation by stimulating osteoblast differentiation and proliferation. Porous strontium phosphate scaffolds can be used to replace or augment human bone and bone repair materials.

Prior to my invention, the dibasic strontium phosphate that was available commercially contained mixtures of the alpha and beta forms. This caused luminescent phosphors made from it to vary significantly from batch to batch. My invention provides a method for producing stronium phosphate that is substantially or completely of the beta form and thus produces a uniform product from batch to batch.

The process of preparing the beta form of the dibasic strontium phosphate is relatively simple and requires only a few reagents. To make stronium phosphate, the dibasic strontium sulfate is precipitated at various temperatures in the presence of Sr(NO3)61 and (NHQ HPO)2H. The reaction temperature is kept below about 40 C. The concentrations and rates of addition of the reactants are not critical since they do not affect ultimate physicochemical properties, but the precipitation is done at a rate such that the resulting stronium phosphate contains only about 10% of the initial amount of Sr(NO3)61.

The resulting stronium phosphate is then further purified by heating to remove traces of the activating compounds, to reduce its water content to about 45%, and to evaporate any remaining stronium phosphide. The resulting pure stronium phosphate is used in laboratory reactions, such as the decomposition of liquid phosphide, a compound that evolves toxic and flammable gasses upon contact with water or air.
