vf3 compound name

Vanadium (III) fluoride is the chemical formula VF3, or hexavalent vanadium fluoride. It is a water-soluble salt and is an essential source of vanadium for oxygen-sensitive applications, such as metal production.

It has the common BI3 structure, a hexagonally closest-packed chloride framework with vanadium ions occupying octahedral holes in the structure. This compound is also paramagnetic, due to the presence of two unpaired electrons.

The bonding in VF3 is formed by three hybridized sp2 orbitals of boron and one empty sp3 orbital of fluorine. The sp2 orbitals of boron have three outer-electrons, while the two sp3 orbitals of fluorine have seven outers electrons in their ground state. They overlap with the three sp2 orbitals of boron, creating bonding between the atoms.
