What is Zirconium Carbide ZrC?


Zirconium caride (ZrC) is a dark grey cubic crystal that has a metallic shine. Crispy. The melting point is 3532. The boiling temperature is 5100. The density of the material is 6.73 g/cm3. The hardness of Mohs is between 8 and 9. Insoluble in hydrochloric acid and cold water. Insoluble in hydrofluoric Acid as well as hot concentrated sulfuric Acid that contains nitric or hydrogen peroxide. It reacts with chlorine at high temperatures to create zirconium tetrachloride. Zirconia is created by burning air at 700 degrees Celsius. ZrC won’t react to water.

Zirconium carbide is a very high melting point material. It is extremely high temperature hardness and refractory. It is used in rocket motors as a solid propellant. It is used in the manufacture of alloy steel. It is used in the production of zirconium and alloy steel.




What is Zirconium Carbide ZrC Useful For?


As fire-resistant coatings for nuclear power plants, zirconium carbide and niobium are both free of hafnium. It is a good choice to cover nuclear fuel uranium dioxide or the thorium dioxide particles because of its neutron absorption rate that is low and weak radiation damage sensitivity. The coating is usually created in a fluidized bed reactor through thermal chemicalvapor vapor deposition. It also has a high emissivity and can conduct high currents at high temperatures making it a desirable material for thermal photovoltaic heaters fields emitter tips and arrays.


It is employed in abrasives as well, as cutting tools, incandescent filaments as well as cladding and cermets.
