copper ii nitrate trihydrate is an inorganic compound that forms dark blue columnar crystals. It is soluble in water and ethanol. It is used to demonstrate chemical voltaic cell reactions in schools. It is also a raw material for making copper oxide and pesticides. It is an ingredient in enamel colorants and serves as a mordant in textile dyeing. It is also a common additive to copper plating. It is sometimes combined with acetic anhydride to form Claycop, a useful reagent for aromatic nitrations and other organic reactions under Menke conditions. It is a precursor to copper oxide, a catalyst in organic synthesis and other industrial processes. It can also be used to prepare copper phthalocyanine.

This material is an oxidizing agent that may intensify fire. It may react with cyanide ions and other metals, and can produce toxic oxides of nitrogen on heating. It is a strong irritant to the skin and eyes. It may cause burns and irritation to the upper respiratory tract and lungs when inhaled. Ingestion and absorption may harm the kidney, liver, and central nervous system. It is incompatible with anhydrides, ammonia, amides, and cyanides.

American Elements produces copper ii nitrate trihydrate to many standard grades when applicable, including Mil Spec (military grade), ACS, Reagent and Research Grade, Food, Agricultural and Pharmaceutical Grade, USP and EP/BP (European Pharmacopoeia/British Pharmacopoeia). This material is also available as micron, submicron and nanopowders.
