What is molybdenum Silicide? Molybdenum Silicide This gray metallic solid is an inorganic substance with the chemical Formula MoSi2. It is insoluble, except in nitric or hydrofluoric acid. Its properties are similar to those of ceramics and metals, as the electronegativity and radii between the two atoms do not differ much. It is electrically conductible and forms an oxidation-resistant silica passivation film on its surface at high temperature. It can be used for high-temperature coatings, electric heating components, integrated electrode film, structural materials and as reinforcing agent for composite materials.

MoSi2 can also be made by the direct reaction between Mo and Si. Reaction formula

Molybdenum Silicide: Physicochemical Properties
MoSi2 (also known as Dalton intermetallic compound) is the intermediate phase in the MoSi binary alloy with the highest silicon contents. It is both a metal and a ceramic, and has exemplary performance at high temperatures. It has a good high-temperature resistance to oxidation, with an oxidation temperature above 1600 that is comparable to SiC. It also has a moderate density (6.24g/cm3), a low coefficient of thermal contraction (8.1×10-6K-1), good electrical and thermal conduction, and brittle transition temperatures (1000) just below ceramic-like hardness. MoSi can be used for a variety of applications including heating elements, anti-oxidation coatings, high temperature structural materials, and integrated circuits.
MoSi2 has molybdenum bonded to the silicon by metallic bond, whereas silicon is covalently bound to silicon. It is insoluble with mineral acids, including aqua regia. However, it is soluble with a mixture nitric and hydrofluoric acids and exhibits good resistance to high temperature oxidation.
In an oxidizing environment, dense quartz glass (SiO2) is formed on the surface of the molybdenum silicide to protect it from continuous oxidation. When the temperature of heating element is greater than 1700 degrees, SiO2 protective films are formed, thickening up to 1710 melting points, and SiO2 fusion as molten drops. Surface extension causes the loss of protective capability. It is possible to form a protective layer again when an element is continuously exposed to an oxidizing substance. Due to the high oxidation of the element at low temperatures, it cannot be used in the range 400-700degC for a prolonged period.

Applications of molybdenum Silicide
In the following industries, molybdenum silicide is used as a high-temperature coating material, an electric heating element, integrated electrode films and structural materials. It can also be found in reinforcing materials for composite materials, wearing-resistant materials and joining materials for structural ceramics.
1) Energy and Chemical Industry: Electric heating elements, high temperature heat exchangers, gas burners and thermocouples with their protection tubes. Melting vessel crucibles.
2) Microelectronics Industry: MoSi2 & other refractory metallic silicides (Ti5Si3, TaSi2, TaSi2, TaSi2, TiSi2, TaSi2, TaSi2, TaSi2, TaSi2, TaSi2, TaSi2, TaSi2, TaSI2, etc.) These films are ideal for interconnecting lines and large-scale circuit gates.
Aerospace industry: The material has been thoroughly researched and extensively used in high temperature anti-oxidation coatings. Specially for turbine engine parts, including blades, impellers combustors tailpipes and sealing devices.
