Calcium is an essential mineral involved in many cellular functions including nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, cardiac function, bone formation, and capillary and cell membrane permeability. It also acts as a phosphate binder, helping to control the levels of phosphorous in your blood. This product is used to treat high phosphate levels in people who are receiving dialysis due to severe kidney disease. It works by binding phosphate from food or medication and allowing it to pass out of your body. This product is also used as a food additive and can be found in candy products such as gummy bears. It is also used as a stabilizer, buffer, and sequestrant.

This Thermo Scientific Chemicals product was originally part of the Alfa Aesar portfolio of products. Some documentation and labeling may still reference the legacy brand.

How should I take this medicine?

Take this medication by mouth with each meal unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Do not take it more often or for longer than directed. Your dose needs to be adjusted based on your phosphate levels and medical condition. Use this medicine with other phosphate binders such as cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3), pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), and phytic acid, and eat plenty of foods that are rich in calcium.

E263 (Calcium acetate) is the calcium salt of acetic acid, and it has the molecular formula C4H6CAO4. It occurs naturally in the form of white crystals. It is hygroscopic and decomposes on heating to produce calcium carbonate and acetone.
